Before attempting to use any of the Stratasys Dimension printers

Capabilities

There are currently two Stratasys Dimension printers - a BST1200es and an SST 1200es.  They differ only in the support material used - the BST uses a breakaway support material and the SST uses a soluble support material (it can also be broken away).

The Dimension printers have a build area of 10"x10"x12" (254x254x305mm) and a layer thickness of 0.010" or 0.013" (0.254mm or 0.330mm).  The model material used is ABS.

The primary advantage of these printers is their reliability, making them ideal for final part versions, and long, unattended runs.

Software
GrabCAD Print - Very simple to use, and supports a wide variety of CAD file formats, so you probably don't even need to export anything.

Build Trays
Both the BST and SST use removable build trays that are intended to be disposable.  In practice, they can be used many times before needing to be replaced.  However, there is one caveat to this - The BST puts down a layer of model material before starting the support material raft.  This layer is difficult to remove after the print has finished, and care must be taken to not damage the tray when doing so.  The SST does not do this, and finished parts easily pop off of the tray with no material left behind.

Etiquette
  • This printer is intended for use with long duration, unattended prints, but you are expected to come back to pickup your print ASAP after it finishes.
  • If another person's print has finished and you wish to use the machine, you may remove the entire build tray, carefully set it aside, and insert a new one for your print.  Do not remove someone else's print from a tray
  • Do not swap build material colors unless absolutely necessary - each swap wastes about 6-7 FEET of filament.

Costs


The Dimension printers use an expensive proprietary support material ($110 per cartridge). They also use an expensive model material, but we have been able to find alternates for this to reduce that cost. Additionally, the build chamber is heated to around 80°C for the duration of the print, which uses a fair amount of electricity. Though we have made every effort to minimize the expense, every print costs money. As a result, Membership does not cover costs for printing on the Dimension printers.


Prints are priced based on two factors:


  1. Actual amount of materials used

  2. Membership level

Determine the cost for a print is easy - simply set up the print in GrabCAD Print like you normally would and hit the "estimate" button. It will tell you exactly how much model and support material will be used. :


As a point of reference, printing a Benchy will cost a Hobbyist about $1.70 and a Pro about $1


Note that these costs are subject to change; our hope is to lower them over time, but the amounts above are in place to cover materials and operational costs of the printers.


Usage Policies


First and foremost, this printer may not be used by members as a commercial "pay for print" service, eg 3d Hubs, etc. Running a print for work/family/friends and being reimbursed is allowed, but excessive use by any members may require changing of policies as the prices are designed to encourage hobbyist use.

MakeIt Labs uses any funds from print jobs run for outside groups or entities to maintain and expand its 3d printing program.


When printing a part you are responsible for costs of materials used, regardless of outcome. This includes prints you abort, prints that break during the finishing process, prints which don't have quite the outcome you expected, etc.


If something goes wrong with the printer itself during the print, which leads to an unfinished print, please contact the Resource Manager to provide more information - if the issue was a malfunction beyond your control you won't be charged for it.
