B. Terms / Glossary
Mold - a negative of the object to be cast
Cast - a positive of the object copied
Undercut - a shape the mold must support that is not directly accessible from "the top"
Draft - sloped shape that makes it easier to remove objects from ridge molds
Dimensional accuracy - distortion of the orginal objects size or shape.
Draft Angle - a method that gives one part molds a way to release.
Two part mold - A mold done in two parts for reasons of undercut, draft, cost savings or other technical consderations
One part mold - A mold that has one open faced
Mold Release - a chemical that can prevent bonding of materials.
Cure Inhibition - Incompatible chemical that slows or stops thermoset / vulcanization process leaving a gum mess
Catalyst - increases in the rate of thermoset, material that causes vulcanization of a monomer (resin).
Vulcanize - The process of liquid to solid transition of resins.
Thermoset - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thermosetting_polymer
Thermoform - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thermoforming
Pot life - time between mixing and pour finishing
Shelf life - Thermoset material storage time
Library Life - how long / how many castings the mold is good for
Durometer - A measure of flexiblity
Degass - a pressure vessel used pull bubbles out of solution
Mold Key - A method of registration in a multi-part mold.
Sprue - A route to cast materials into the mold. www.en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sprue_(manufacturing)
Mold Vent - A route for air to escape a mold when casting.
Parting Line - a path around a part in a multi-part mold that hides the mold sepration seam by leaving little or no undercut.
